English Job Interview

Ace your English job interview. Phrases that make a great impression and answers to the most common questions.

The lesson

Tell me about yourself, the work version

In an interview, keep this answer professional. Give your background, your experience and one strength. Example: I have three years of experience in customer service, and I really enjoy helping people. Avoid personal details, focus on work.

Strengths and weaknesses

For strengths, give one and add a short example: One of my strengths is teamwork. In my last job I worked closely with a small team. For weaknesses, be honest but positive: Sometimes I focus too much on details, but I am learning to manage my time better.

Common questions and answers

Be ready for: Why do you want this job? (I admire your company and I want to grow here.) Where do you see yourself in five years? (I would like to take on more responsibility.) Keep answers short, clear and positive.

Tip: ask a question and close well

At the end, the interviewer often says: Do you have any questions? Always ask one: What does a typical day look like? Then close politely: Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing from you. A confident, polite ending leaves a great impression.
